September 24, 2026

To mark the 105th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and Japan, a commemorative ceremony was held at the Casa Quinta Storace in the Prado zone to plant three sakura (Japanese cherry blossom) trees. These were part of a batch of 50 trees acquired for planting in various areas of the Prado.

The event was attended by representatives from this Chamber and members of the Centenary Committee. In their speeches, the Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Kenichi Okada, and the Mayor of Montevideo, Mr. Mario Bergara, highlighted the importance of deepening cultural ties and friendship between the two nations.

This initiative is part of the «Sakura Project,» established by the Committee for the Centenary of Japan-Uruguay Diplomatic Relations and agreed upon during the centenary celebrations (1921–2021).
